Homemade Powder Laundry Detergent
I've been making this powdered laundry detergent for years now and I thought I'd share my recipe with y'all.
Why would I make my own detergent? Because it was cost effective, I'm a frugal lady and I hate throwing money away. So I eventually went down the rabbit hole of how to make your own laundry detergent. Not to mention I can make this batch and it'll last me 5-6 months. All my ingredients cost about $20, which isn't bad! Less than $0.10 a load.
I actually started out making a liquid laundry detergent but moved away from that because it was many more steps. This powder recipe is a lot more simple and can be made in less than 10 minutes.
Here's what you'll need:
Shopping List
Borax 65 oz.
Super Washing Soda 55 oz.
Pure Baking Soda 3.5 lbs.
Oxi-Clean 3 lbs.
Purex Scent Crystals 15.5 oz (your scent choice)
Canister of your choice to hold your detergent. I use Mainstrays 2 gallon canister pictured below.
Coffee Scoop (optional)
This is the canister and scoop I use, both can be bought at Walmart.
So I'll begin by saying, I used to pour all the ingredients into one huge container, but that became tedious. I had to then transfer to my container after the ingredients were mixed. I'm a busy lady and I need quick and easy. Now I just add a little of each ingredient and mix, then do another layer and mix again until I run out of all the ingredients. Easy right!

Pour each ingredient a little at a time.
I love the Lavender scented Purex Crystals.
Make sure you mix! It's not an exact science and I'm okay with that.
Once you mixed all your ingredients, you should end up with about 2/3's of the container filled, if you have a jar like mine. You don't have to use a container like mine you could always break up the mixture into canning jars. Speaking of which, wouldn't that be a wonderful gift idea for a new homeowner, your elderly neighbor or college student, just add a small bow and a kind note.
Want to try out other laundry recipes, you can find a ton on pinterest with varying ingredients. I don't think there is a right or wrong way, try this one and if you don't like it, try tweaking it till your happy.
